Beyond Contraceptives

Demystifying family planning dynamics in Uttar Pradesh

There is no dearth of articles, books, monographs on the wide gamut of population, fertility behavior, birth control, family planning and the family welfare programmes as well. That more or less applies to the more recent avatar i.e. reproductive health, and it is unambiguously clear that most of the initiatives; even those ones which are offered as singularly innovative remain immersed on beaten tracks and thus come out as singularly predictable. The fudgy academic and research scenario notwithstanding, there is an imperative need to take reproductive health programmes beyond the military and market metaphors (for example target, demand, unmet need). Our experiences also convey that the approaches and policies in this regard must move past neo-Malthusian arithmetic and beyond contraceptive prevalence in understanding how the social arrangement and inaccessible health system provide rural women difficult proposition to regulate and manage their reproductive career. Beyond Contraceptives is thus in tune with Mahmood Mamdani’s understanding that motivation for family size originate in social and cultural experiences, not in pumped-in propaganda and education from above, which repudiates the reality of social experiences people have. Rejecting neo-Malthusian maxim that poor profligate, the narratives offered through the volume draw us closer to the experiences of rural poor women who negotiate their reproductive trajectories and manage intra-house dynamics of communication and power relation in deciding the actual family size. Mohd. Shahid has been actively engaged in repositioning the premises influencing the policies and strategies with regard to reproductive health issues. He has been immensely skilful in taking complex issues from the top to people and communities whom it matters most. Through his writings and research endeavors Shahid makes an impassioned advocacy for emancipation as the core of the profession. He is currently involved in critically following the trajectory of violence and how it criss-crosses development deficits. He presently teaches at Department of Social Work, Bhim Rao Ambedkar College, University of Delhi.
