Our Rann, Your Sanctuary: Agarias of Little Rann of Kachchh, Gujarat

The issues associated with conservation and livelihood, especially in the context of people living inside or adjacent to the areas demarcated as a protected area have in the last few decades drawn the close attention of academicians, researchers and policy makers from across the globe. As a corollary; working with communities at the centre of the debates and discourses related to conservation and livelihood has emerged as an important area of intervention for community practitioners, rural management specialists, and other human service professionals. These debates have also engulfed the lives of the Agarias of Little Rann of Kachchh (LRK), Gujarat; who have been living adjacent to the LRK and migrating inside the Little Rann for centuries to transform sub-soil brine into crystalline inland salt under extremely hostile environmental conditions.

This book explores the various facets of this debate in the context of the Agarias of LRK. It presents an ethnographic account of the situations and challenges emerging from the imposition of the western notions of conservation and development interspercing with the traditional lives and livelihoods of local communities. The book shall be of keen interest to the academicians, researchers, and students of social work, sociology, anthropology, geography, rural management, human ecology and tourism studies. In addition, it will provide policy makers, community practitioners and readers on either side of the conservation and livelihood debate a deeper understanding of the contours of the relationship shared by communities with their environment.
